SPRUCE HOUSE

Modern South, rejuvenated

Spruce House was an investment property for our client. It was a complete remodel of a 1930s single-story bungalow-styled house, located in downtown Durham, NC.

For the interior, we added a new bedroom with a soaring 15-foot high ceiling, and a full bath. The existing public areas were combined to open up the space, creating a single great room with a stunning vaulted ceiling. Also featured prominently in the design was a thoughtful selection of finishes, composing of natural quartzite countertops, warm hardwood flooring, and subdued, neutral grays found on the wall coverings and ceramic tiles.

Project area: 1561 sf. Completed 2018.

The interior palette was carried out to the exterior of the house and landscaping, accented by the black metal door hardware and porch railing, bronze windows and gutters, and natural stone pavings and retaining wall.

This house started out with an understated charm, but was neglected for many years. When the project began, almost everything had to be demolished — all that remained of the building was its original masonry foundation and wood structure.
